My Tilapia Turns Black! Nice!

My friend Felix and I caught several Tilapia (a.k.a. Japanese Fish possibly a Oreochromis niloticus about one month back. I am not quite sure if it's the right name but at first all of them is silver Grey color in my fish tank.

Now, one of them turning in a stunning BLACK color with pink tail.

I read about the male Tilapia will turn black when they are going to mating!! So I may get babies! LOL I think my 2 feet tank is not big enough!!

My Cherry Shrimps MULTIPLIED!!! hahahahahaha

I had bought 1 month back about 20 cherry shrimps from local fish shops at Clementi (C238).

I done the following.

  1. Transferred some "cycled" water from the other fish tank into a new tank.
  2. Put in new water + few drops of "de-chlorine" solution
  3. Put in 2 bags of blackish blue stones (look light blue when in water)
  4. Put in 2 sponge air bubble filter (shrimp friendly)
  5. Put in the Cherry Shrimps (Very hardy for this species)
  6. Put some Taiwan Moss or ferns in
  7. Put a 55 Watt lights on top
  8. Put a overhead fan and on it 24/7
  9. Put a digital aquarium thermometer inside and make it below 29 degree Celsius
  10. Feed the cherry shrimps with "Japanese" label food found in C238 twice a day
  11. If found moldy food, fish it out.
  12. Wait for them to breed!!!

This is what I have right now!

Basket! My Tilapia Eaten My Oto Fish!! (Still Munching away now)

Wah lau...I see these Tilapia poops a lot hence purchased 6 sucker (Oto) fishes to clean up the tank...but guess who clean up who? Yes...that' my SGD$1.50 Oto fish in the mouth of the Tilapia fish!!! ARghhhh...

Weird Bubble Carrying A Molted Ghost Shrimp

This weird bubble holding a molted Ghost Shrimp and it lasted almost half and hour!! Anyone know why is this happening??

My Planted Aquarium Tank!

I had recently did a upgrade to my fish tank by adding more plants and supplying the tank with Carbon Dioxide (CO2) via a CO2 tank bought from Clementi fish shop (LFS).

The small internal tank is actually a breeding tank for my newly acquired pregnant freshwater shrimp and it will give birth hopefully soon! It's exciting to see shrimp giving birth and this is a much bigger shrimp! (Almost like a prawn!)

You can see that green unfertilized eggs under it's belly now. They look greenish now :)

I have another aquarium that holds little "Soon Hock" and baby freshwater lobster, they are a fun to watch when I feed them with sea-monkey (Brine Shrimps) or feeder fishes.

That's all for today!! :)

Fish Trap To Aquarium

I had went fish trapping again last Saturday and I caught a hell lot of small fishes!!! I am not really sure if they are all the same type of fish which the website I found look exactly like a common molly.

Here's my fishes in my new aquarium!

Here's the Common Molly photo from the website on fresh water guide :)

Now My fishes are swimming wildly in my new 2 feet aquarium tank that I just bought on Sunday. I am still figuring out how to raise these fishes as the bread I had given them made the water all milky almost immediately and the fish food seem to be too big for them to "bite".

Anyone got experience on fresh water fish feeding? What is the best fish food for these fishes that does not "dirty the aquarium too quickly? :)

Building A Cheap Fish Trap (DIY) For catching fish in the wild.

I had read books and websites on how to build a fish trap using soda bottle(s) with many different variations and I had personally tested a few designs and most works but not perfect. I am designing one just for those fishing in canal or just for fun. I will put those designs that does not work that well in a canal and those works.

This design works well in an aquarium tank and you can trap the fish safely without using the fish net and risk stressing out the fishes. However you cannot choose which fish that you want to trap and it does take some time for the fish to find it's way into the bottle by using bait.

This design also not good enough for catching wild fishes in the sea or fresh water fishes as they will swim back out quickly.

I read the book on SAS Survival Guide on the fish trap section did show the above design but I soon realized it's not good enough in catching fishes in the wild. I search deeper into the internet world and found Soda-Bottle-Fish-Trap at instructables.com but it's basically the same concept but with different method of building it.

Here's how I created my version of a relatively cheap fish trap using a bigger plastic bottle and a small stainless steel wire mesh for water drainage.

Firstly, I got a bigger plastic bottle from the supermarket. This is the bigger version then ordinary soda bottles for bigger fishes.

Then I use a scissors to poke an hole and cut around the bottle head, do not spoil the head as you need it for the trap to work.

This looks like the original design but it's not complete yet! There are more things to add to this design to make it more effective to catch fishes in the wild! :)

The idea is to make a water drainage at the bottom side of the fish trap where the head is the inverted bottle neck and the bottom drains the water out when you pull the trap out of the water/Sea.

Cut out the stainless steel wire mesh for washing vegetables and fit the wire mesh inside the bottom of the fish trap and use some fishing lines to tie it up nicely and securely.

Then on the top side use stapler to stapler the fish trap plus drill two small hole to put the fishing line through for holding it upright when lowering down to the water. Put some weight at the bottom to let it sink down faster. Since the water can pass through easily, it will sink like a stone. Put some of your favorite fish bait in and watch the fish go blindly into the trap.

When hoisting up the fish trap, the water goes out from the bottom hence making it light weight and harder for the fish to swim out as the water pressure is pressing downwards while the trap are pulled out of the water.

You will be surprised how easy to catch fish using this. I had tested a smaller version of this with great success. I will test out this later this week and hope to get video for you to see how it works. Pray that it won't rain on Saturday or Sunday! :)
